Seiji Humphries

In memory of my dear cycling-mad father, I'm taking part in the 2025 MS Brissie to the Bay to change the lives of people living with neuro conditions!

Dad passed away on May 31st, aged 94. He was a total cycling tragic and was still riding until late last year. He competed at national veterans' events and even his 80s, would ride 100km on a Sunday and 30-40km 3 days a week, despite pain and disability. He would really approve of me taking part in this event to help people living with conditions like MS and dementia.

Dad and I did a 100km charity ride when he was in mid-70s. While I haven't ridden much lately, I will take inspiration from him. He very nearly lost his leg and his life in a horrible hit-and-run accident aged 61. But he still got back on his bike and rode again in local cycle club races, despite many years of major operations, treatment, severe chronic pain and permanent disability (shortened leg, fused ankle).

Every kilometre I ride and every dollar I raise will help fund essential services, support, and research for the 1 in 4 Queenslanders living with a neurological condition.

Did you know?

  • Over 1 million Queenslanders live with a neurological condition, including MS, Parkinson’s, epilepsy, and MND.
  • Many face daily challenges—from mobility struggles to cognitive and sensory changes.
  • Just 6% of those living with a neurological condition receive vital support through the NDIS.

That’s why I’m pushing myself—not just physically, but in my fundraising—to ensure no one faces MS or a neurological condition alone.

Please donate today and help power life-changing support and research. Every dollar counts, and together, we can make a lasting impact!

'Getting back up - again' newspaper story

View
Here is the text of a local newspaper article about Dad, after he had yet another cycling accident and broke his pelvis in 1998. He was interviewed lying in a hospital bed:

Maryborough vetern cyclist Hugh Humphries has a straight-forward practical attitude to adversity: "You just keep getting back up - you've got to, don't you?"
After rebuilding after Cyclone Tracey, surviving cancer and almost losing one leg after a horrific hit and run accident, he is battling his way back on to his beloved bike a second time after a serious road race fall on Saturday.
The state veteran cycling champion certainly knows all about pain and fighting back.  In 1992 he was left for dead after a hit and run cycling accident which left him with multiple fractures and worse of all, his lower leg muscle destroyed, forcing doctors to grafts a large part of one of his back muscles on to his leg.
It was only his doctor's urging that he would ride again which made him fight to save his leg. "Dr Jenkins kept telling me I'd be riding again and I believed him and that's why I wouldn't let them amputate my leg," Humphries said.
'When I first got back on the bike, the leg would not work well., I felt very awkward and I hardly got going. It was quite disappointing as my leg would go out on an angle instead of straight down,” he said.
Despite having his ankle fused, his persistence with gym work built him back up to 300km of training on the road each week in 1997.
Three weeks ago, Humphries won the Biggenden road race with a handicap. Only 2km from the winning post and close to sealing another victory in the final road race of the Maryborough Cycle Club season on Saturday, Humphries was involved in a serious cycling accident.
Lying in St Stephen’s Hospital with a broken pelvis, stitches and abrasions, the 67-year-old says he just cannot wait to get back to clocking up the kilometres on the road.
“I was told by other cyclists that if I had finished my partner Bruce Pherson and I would have won the teams race,” he said.
“But I’ll definitely be back as soon as possible, the sooner the better. But I’ll give the track season a miss. One knock – well that would finish me off for good.”
