Training rides in Brisbane

06 Mar 2020

Whether you’re an experienced rider, or basically jumping on your bike for the first time to join the Ride to Fight MS, it might be a good idea to get a few training rides under your seat before the big day. Here are some cycling training routes we found around Brisbane that might suit. Feel free to share your favourite training rides on the MS Brissie to the Bay Facebook page!

10KM TRAINING: MT COOT-THA LOOP

Distance: 9.5km
Description:

The Mt Coot-tha loop is a popular route for cycle hill training. The ride begins at the base of Mt Coot-tha on Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. Ride in a clockwise direction for a moderate in-the-saddle climb, or in an anti-clockwise direction for a challenging, leg burning ascent.

The loop is approximately 10 kilometres. Ramp up your hill training with this heart pumping ride and be rewarded with amazing views or coffee at the lookout point.

25KM TRAINING: MINI BRISBANE LOOP

Distance: 20km
Description:

The Mini Brisbane River Loop cuts out the Indooroopilly/Tennyson/Fairfield sections of the main loop by heading across the Eleanor Schonell Bridge. This short-cut effectively cuts the loop in half to around 20km. There a couple of options, avoiding the main roads is best done by going along Sandford Street at Toowong and take the back streets along the river rather than taking Sir Fred Schonell Drive.

50KM TRAINING: THE GAP TO MT GLORIOUS

Distance: 60km
Description:

The ride has beautiful views, several long and challenging climbs and sweeping descents. Start at the corner of Settlement Road and Waterworks Road, The Gap. Head north for the tough Mount Glorious climb, or head west for the easier Mount Nebo ascent. The complete loop from The Gap is around 60km, but you can cut the ride shorter by doing an out and back.

100KM TRAINING: CENTURION RIDE

Distance: 97km
Description:

Head off on this scenic route with tall and established trees and admire the lovely homes along the way. Be warned that this ride can be challenging with the hills around West End, Dutton Park and Mt Ommaney and the killer finish up Blunder Road.
