Cycling tips for beginners

Each year, the MS Brissie to the Bay brings together a variety of riders from all walks of life: from the highly experienced cyclist, the casual weekend rider, to the beginner and less experienced cyclist. With that in mind, we have provided some handy cycling tips for beginners.

These tips are designed to make cycling a safe and enjoyable experience for beginners.

Before commencing any form of exercise, ensure to visit your health care professional if you have any health concerns. For most people though, cycling is a safe and effective form of exercise.

Captain Obvious point: you will need a bicycle helmet (not only to protect your noggin, but because it is the law).

Until you’re more comfortable with cycling, it is recommended you find a traffic-free area, like a local park. There you can practice riding single-handed as you will need to get used to making hand signals and looking over both shoulders to improve your visual awareness. You can also purchase small mirrors to attach to your handlebars or helmet to assist with seeing behind you (we recommend rearviz).

Be sure to know the road rules, regulations for cyclists, and take it slowly. If you are feeling unwell due to exercise, stop and seek medical advice.
